Welcome to Khalifa University's ENGEOS Research Group!

The Environmental and Geophysical Sciences (ENGEOS) Lab at KU focuses on studying natural processes and addressing environmental challenges to propose solutions and decision support systems for stakeholders to achieve sustainability. The overarching goal has been to advance science in the field of environmental sensing and modeling using satellite data, numerical models, and in situ observations. ENGEOS lab has been awarded several research projects funded by government authorities and local and international stakeholders with a total level of external support of around 7 million dollars.

3 Research activities in ENGEOS lab address land, atmospheric, and oceanic processes and the interactions between them. The research has been based on an extensive use of satellite remote sensing, numerical models in high-performance computers, and ground-based sensors and observation networks deployed on campus and across the UAE.

The team of researchers at the ENGEOS lab successfully deployed a comprehensive air quality monitoring system in the UAE that was supported by the ministry of climate change and environment. In addition, ENGEOS has been develop an aviation weather decision support system with focus on fog tracking and forecast system that uses both satellite and advanced numerical models. The effort was supported by Etihad Airways. The team also has been working with the National Center of Meteorology to develop a unified weather forecast model leveraging the outcomes of the UAE rain enhancement program. Moreover, the lab has worked on marine related issues, developing a number of relevant applications for oil spill and seawater quality tracking and monitoring in the region. ENGEOS team has had success in working with the UAE space agency and other partners for the development of UAE wide Land Cover and habitat maps. Plus, the team contributed to the validation of the SMAP NASA mission for soil moisture monitoring with an assessment of the product in the UAE and the region. ENGEOS lab’s activities are expanding rapidly in the UAE and the region to cover new applications and address the local need for the use of remote sensing and advanced numerical modeling to addresses the local environmental challenges with a local expertise and skills.
